Assistant Sheriff Tom Gallagher began his law enforcement career with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office in 1987. He worked as a Deputy Sheriff I and promoted to Deputy Sheriff II in 1989. After completing the basic police academy, he was assigned to various assignments including Operations, Support Services and Special Investigations, including the San Mateo County Narcotic Task Force. Assistant Sheriff Gallagher promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2000, lieutenant in 2009, and captain in 2012.
He was appointed to his current role as Assistant Sheriff as an integral member of the Sheriff’s executive team, in 2014. He is currently responsible for all adult correctional facilities operated by the Sheriff’s Office as well as oversight of the current jail replacement project. He oversees the Corrections Division, Support Services Division and the Jail Planning Bureau.
Assistant Sheriff Gallagher is a native of San Mateo County and a graduate of Serra High School. He holds a Bachelor Degree from Union Institute and University. He is a graduate of Los Angeles Police Department Leadership Program and a past Chairman of the California Narcotic Officers’ Association.
