Assistant Sheriff Jeff Kearnan begin his career in law enforcement in 1986 as a military policeman with the U.S Air Force and was stationed at Homestead, Fl., Kunsan, Korea, and Beale, Ca air bases. He continued his law enforcement career when he joined the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office in 1990 as a Correctional Officer. Since then, he has held assignments, both as a deputy/detective, supervisor and manager in Corrections, Patrol, S.W.A.T., Narcotics, as Assistant Deputy Director of the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center (NCRIC) Fusion Center and as Director of the San Mateo County Area Office of Emergency Services. As a Captain, Jeff was responsible for the Homeland Security and Support Services Divisions.
Assistant Sheriff Kearnan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Management and a Master’s Degree in Homeland Defense and Security Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School. Assistant Sheriff Kearnan serves on the advisory board for the Salvation Army Redwood City Corps in the capacity of disaster committee member and treasurer. Assistant Sheriff Kearnan is also a former U.S. Air Force Sergeant and U.S. Army Specialist with the California National Guard.
Captain Kearnan was appointed to Assistant Sheriff by Sheriff Carlos G. Bolanos and joined the Executive Team in April 2016. In his current role, he is responsible for the Operations which oversees Investigations, Narcotics and Vehicle Theft Task Forces, PIO, North County Area Command, Coastside Area Command and South County Area Command Patrol, including the law enforcement service contracts with the cities of San Carlos, Millbrae, Half Moon Bay, the towns of Woodside, Portola Valley and the Transit Police Bureau.
